Tony Elumelu is a Nigerian banker, investor and philanthropist. He chairs United Bank for Africa and founded Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
Banking career
Elumelu was born on 22 March 1963 and studied economics at Ambrose Alli University and the University of Lagos. He joined the banking industry and led the group that acquired Crystal Bank, later renamed Standard Trust Bank.
Standard Trust Bank merged with United Bank for Africa in 2005. Elumelu became group managing director of UBA and led the bank during a period of expansion across African markets. Heirs Holdings and Transcorp
Elumelu founded Heirs Holdings in 2010 as an African investment company. Its interests have included financial services, hospitality, power and energy. He is also associated with Transnational Corporation, whose public filings document its listed businesses and board structure.
Tony Elumelu Foundation
The Tony Elumelu Foundation supports African entrepreneurs through training, mentoring and seed funding. Its flagship entrepreneurship programme began in 2015 with a stated ten-year commitment of $100 million.
