Nnamdi Kanu Biography: IPOB, Biafra, and the 2025 Life Sentence

Max AdeyemiJune 26, 2026September 10, 2026

Nnamdi Kanu is the founder and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist movement seeking an independent Biafran state in south-eastern Nigeria. He also led Radio Biafra, which carried IPOB’s political messages.

Background and IPOB

Kanu was born on 25 September 1967 in Isiama Afaraukwu, Abia State. He later moved to the United Kingdom and holds British citizenship. He established IPOB in 2012, reviving a cause rooted in the Republic of Biafra and the Nigerian Civil War of 1967 to 1970.

Nigeria proscribed IPOB in 2017. IPOB rejects the government’s description of the group and says it campaigns for self-determination. These are opposing claims by the parties, so they should be attributed rather than stated as the site’s own conclusion.

Arrest, bail and return to Nigeria

Nigerian authorities arrested Kanu in Lagos in October 2015. The Federal High Court granted him bail in April 2017 under restrictive conditions. He left Nigeria after a military operation near his family home later that year.

Kanu was detained in Kenya in June 2021 and returned to Nigeria. His lawyers described the transfer as an unlawful rendition, while the Nigerian government defended its custody and prosecution. Later appellate decisions considered both the manner of his return and whether the criminal case could continue.

2025 judgment

On 20 November 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on seven terrorism-related counts. The court imposed life imprisonment on several counts and additional prison terms on others, to run concurrently. The linked judgment is the primary record for the charges, findings and sentence.

Kanu and his supporters reject the conviction and have argued for legal and political remedies. Reports about an appeal can change, so this profile does not describe an appeal as pending without a dated court filing.

Reading the case carefully

Kanu’s case combines criminal law, separatist politics, security claims and civil-liberties arguments. A neutral account distinguishes court findings from allegations and from IPOB’s response. It also avoids assigning responsibility for individual acts of violence without a judgment or a clearly identified source.
