John Obi Mikel: Biography, Chelsea Career & Super Eagles

John Obi Mikel is a retired Nigerian midfielder best known for eleven seasons at Chelsea and for winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles.

Early career

Mikel was born in Jos on 22 April 1987. He represented Nigeria at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, where the team reached the final. His performances brought major European interest, and he joined Chelsea in 2006 after a disputed transfer process involving Manchester United and Lyn.

Chelsea

At Chelsea, Mikel developed into a defensive midfielder who protected the back line and helped control possession. He made 372 appearances for the club, according to Chelsea’s retirement profile.
